‘A True Gentleman’ – tributes flood the teacher who was killed on the freeway on his way home

A young teacher who tragically died while walking the M7 in Co Kildare early Saturday morning was remembered as “an absolute gentleman” who was “truly loved by everyone”.

Rendan Fitzpatrick, 24, from Powerswood, Thomastown, Co Kilkenny, was struck by “a vehicle or vehicles” traveling north on the motorway near his home in Naas around 4am on Saturday.

“Mr. Fitzpatrick will be greatly missed by me and all the students at St Kevin’s. His teaching never ceased to make us smile, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. May he rest in peace” , read another.

A flurry of tributes accompanied his obituary on the website as well as other social media platforms, along with expressions of condolences to Mr Fitzpatrick’s family, including his parents Fiona and Eamon and his sister Eimear.

Burial arrangements are not yet known.

Meanwhile, Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the accident to come forward and urging anyone who may have stopped before emergency services arrived at the scene to get in touch with them.

“It is also believed that more than one vehicle may have collided with the man and while a number of drivers have come forward we would urge those motorists to contact Gardaí,” Gardai said in a statement.

“We are also asking motorists with video footage (including dashcam) traveling in both directions on the M7 between J11 and J10 in the hours prior to the collision to contact the Gardaí Inquiry.”
