Gardaí are investigating after thieves stole belongings from a car owned by a Ukrainian couple who arrived in Ireland just two weeks ago after fleeing the war-torn country.
The couple were staying at the Travelodge in Ballymun, north Dublin, when they discovered on Thursday morning that their car had been broken into overnight. A laptop, tablet, guitar, clothes and shoes were stolen.
Olena and her husband Anass fled Kyiv when the Russian invasion began. The couple, who didn’t want to reveal their last names, left Ukraine and passed through a number of countries before reaching France.
You then traveled by ferry from Cherbourg to Ireland almost two weeks ago. The couple had planned to travel to Cork on Thursday but this incident ruined their plans.
A message from Olena on the GoFundMe page said her experience in Ireland prior to the theft was very positive.
“Up until last night, Ireland had been nothing but good to us for almost two weeks,” Olena said.
“From the Garda officers who greeted us at Dublin Port, to the workers at the shelter and every Irishman we met, we have been blown away by their kindness and support.
“Last night, however, we were the victims of a crime that took us by surprise. Someone broke into our car in the shielding center’s underground car park.
“He took most of our belongings, which was all we could carry as we left Kyiv under the noise of the bombing. And what he left behind is covered in blood! (Apparently he cut his hand breaking the window).”
Olena said Gardaí told the couple they needed to contact their insurance provider for compensation.
A GoFundMe page set up to collect donations to help the couple surpassed its €3,000 goal last night. So far, over 7,200 euros have been raised for the couple.
“But our insurance wouldn’t cover that because it’s impossible to reach them now,” Olena said.
“So we thought about taking matters into our own hands by putting our story on GoFundMe to see if people would be kind enough to help us fix the car (rear window is broken) and buy it of what we lost (clothes, shoes, laptop, tablet…).
“Every support is welcome. Lots of love and respect.”
In a statement, Gardaí confirmed that they are investigating an incident of theft from a car that occurred on March 24.
“At 4 a.m. in a hotel parking lot, a window of the car was broken and a number of items were taken,” said a Garda spokesman.
“No arrests have been made at this time. The investigations are ongoing.”
