The abandoned Hotel Bontddu Hall was devastated by a fire in 2020

Step inside the grand Welsh hotel that has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Richard Burton – until a tragic fire half destroyed it, half perfectly preserved.

Bontddu Hall, built in 1873 as a country residence for the Mayor of Birmingham, is situated in Snowdonia National Park between Dolgellau and Barmouth.

The 20 bedroom building was then used as one of the grandest hotels in Wales until 2004, with guests including Winston Churchill, Neville Chamberlain, Richard Burton and Sean Connery.

Transformed into a private residence after the hotel closed, tragedy struck in 2020 when a fire broke out and the owner’s wife was killed.

Built in 1873, Bontddu Hall was one of the grandest hotels in Wales until 2004, with guests including Winston Churchill and Sean Connery.

It’s been deserted since then, but city exploration vlogger Mr Airborne has revealed what the half-burned hotel looks like in a new video.

The video shows the building’s magnificent exterior, almost untouched by the fire – but then ventures inside to reveal blackened walls and derelict rooms.

One of the rooms is completely destroyed and buried under rubble – while the ornate hallway next to it remains in perfect condition.

“I love exploring these abandoned places as they give a glimpse of what the world would be like after humans,” Mr Airborne said.

“When I was there, I didn’t know much about the story of the dying woman.

“It was a stunning place and the bits that were half burnt and half still in perfect condition were amazing.

“It shows two sides of the life of this place at a glance.”

The hotel is currently on the market with Christie & Co. with a list price of £950,000.
