Abitur results day: Worries in Sussex about slump in grades

A-LEVEL students have been warned to expect lower grades due to the stricter grading aimed at combating restricted class inflation.

With the results later this week, colleges across Brighton and Sussex have been told some will miss their university offers and are urging them to clear.

The news comes as regulator Ofqual is trying to bring grades back down to 2019 levels after the proportion of high grades has skyrocketed due to the Covid pandemic.

Donna-Marie Janson, Rector of Varndean College in Brighton, said: “There are obviously concerns because students’ circumstances are different. You have never taken a public exam.

Ms Janson also said students were unsure if they would be taking exams at the end of the year or if their in-class assessments would determine their grade.

She added, “I think the most important piece of advice is that a drop in your grades doesn’t mean you won’t get your first offer.”

In 2021, over 40 percent of students received either an A* or A grade, compared to a quarter of students in 2019.

This year, grades are expected to be somewhere between those two numbers, with the idea that in 2023 grades will be back to pre-pandemic levels.

Earlier in the week, Ofqual and UCAS sent a letter to all students who received results, saying they had shown real dedication and resilience throughout their studies.

The letter also emphasized that admissions “isn’t always about grades” and that “through the clearing there will be a lot of choice”.

Both the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex released advice ahead of Thursday.

The University of Brighton has advised parents not to panic but to “encourage your child to have a back-up plan with different options available for results day”.

Kevin Betts, Head of Recruitment at the University of Sussex, said: “Clearing is not a race to the bottom, students just need to be more flexible.

“Get in early and you can be out by lunchtime celebrating getting into a great varsity with your buddies.”
