Academy Postpones Hearing to Discuss Will Smith’s Oscar Smash Forward

The Board of Directors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has postponed its meeting to address Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars until this Friday in order to “timely” address the incident.

Resident David Rubin wrote to the board of governors on Wednesday morning that the meeting originally scheduled for April 18 would now take place 10 days earlier.

Last week, Smith resigned his membership in the academy that organizes the Oscars and said he would accept any consequences arising from the disciplinary hearing.

The 53-year-old Hollywood star won Best Actor for King Richard at last month’s ceremony, just minutes after he stormed the stage and punched Chris Rock when the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head.

Mr Rubin’s letter to the board said the meeting would “address potential sanctions against Will Smith in response to his actions during the Oscars broadcast.”

It continued, “The April 18 date was set in accordance with California law and our standards of conduct as our agenda included a possible suspension or expulsion of Mr. Smith from membership.

“We were required to give Mr Smith 15 days notice of the board meeting at which such action might be taken and also to give him an opportunity to provide the board with a written explanation at least five days before that meeting.”

He added that after Smith’s resignation, “suspension or expulsion is no longer possible and the timeline prescribed by law no longer applies. It is in the best interests of everyone involved that this is dealt with in a timely manner.”

Smith, the star of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and Hollywood blockbusters like I Am Legend, has apologized to Rock, its competitors and the winners.

In a statement on Instagram, he admitted he had an “emotional” reaction to the joke, but said “violence in all its forms is toxic and destructive.”

Prior to his resignation, Hollywood trading house Variety reported that Smith met with Academy leaders to discuss his outburst and apologized to Mr Rubin and executive director Dawn Hudson.
