An animal rights group said the number of dogs being abandoned is at an all-time high after receiving 2,612 inquiries from dog owners this year.
ogs Trust has asked the public to think about the long-term commitment that comes with owning a dog, warning that while puppies can be “incredibly cute” they “grow into bigger dogs that need training, daily walks and all.” associated costs require with dog ownership”.
It said the number of strays and abandoned animals was increasing rapidly across the country, citing the example of a Lurcher staff named Carmel.
She is believed to be around two years old and was found by a member of the public near the charity’s placement center in Finglas, Dublin. Extremely emaciated and dehydrated, Carmel had sustained severe injuries to her hind legs, particularly her right leg. Vets had to amputate several toes but were able to save the leg.
It is believed that she was abandoned and was a stray for some time.
Niamh Curran-Kelly, Veterinary and Welfare Manager at Dogs Trust Ireland, said: “Carmel’s condition was shocking. It is so harrowing to think of what she went through and the pain she was in before she came into our care. Her injuries were so bad that it was difficult to look at her.
“Fortunately, we were able to get her some much-needed veterinary care.
“Now that she’s not in so much pain, it’s wonderful to see her sweet and cheerful personality shine through.”
With the number of abandoned dogs on the rise, the organization is reminding people considering getting a dog for Christmas to remember that “a dog is for life.” They also advise against getting a dog during a busy time like Christmas.
Ciara Byrne, the charity’s communications director, said: “Unfortunately, every year we have to repeat the message that people need to consider all aspects of dog ownership before committing to welcoming a dog into their family.
“While there are always extenuating circumstances in wanting to give away a dog, unfortunately in many cases, especially this year, it’s because people didn’t think about the obligation that comes with getting a dog.”
