According to Irish Water, tests show stocks in Dublin and Wicklow are safe to drink despite “a musty smell and taste”.

Irish Water says it has confirmed tap water is safe to drink in parts of Dublin and Wicklow after customers complained their water smelled and tasted “earthy and musty”.

After ongoing testing of raw water for drinking in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, Dublin City and North and East Wicklow, expert findings revealed the presence of a substance called methylisoborneol (MIB).

The company said while MIB can cause people to perceive an earthy and musty smell and taste in drinking water, it is not harmful to human health.

MIB is a naturally occurring organic substance produced by algae in lakes, rivers, streams and reservoirs that can be smelled at very low concentrations.

Seasonal increases in naturally occurring algae or bacteria in water sources can cause some people’s MIB to rise above the taste and odor threshold, Irish Water said.

A spokesman for the utility said it was impossible to predict when MIB would begin to appear or how long it would last.

“However, it will likely be resolved in the short term if the current rainy season continues and the weather cools down,” they added.

“We will continue to closely monitor this water supply and continue to monitor the concentration of MIB in the water.”

Irish Water’s Head of Asset Operations, Tom Cuddy, wanted to reassure customers that water from assets serving Dublin and Wicklow was safe to drink.

“We understand some customers’ concerns about the smell or taste of their drinking water,” he added.

“While the smell and taste may be objectionable to some customers, MIB is not toxic or harmful and the water remains drinkable.

“As a precaution, we have increased testing of these shipments and are closely monitoring the situation.”
