Acivision CEO Bobby Kotick has always had a soft spot for Guitar Hero game and recently told VentureBeat that he has an idea for a new entry in the franchise.

During the interview, Kotick told VentureBeat that he had a “really great vision” for the next Guitar Hero game, but unfortunately, Activision didn’t have the “resources” to do so.

“Phil [Spencer] and I started researching things for the future,” said Kotick. I want to make a new Guitar Hero for a while, but I don’t want to add a team for production, supply chain and QA for production. And the chip shortage is huge. We don’t really have the ability to do that.

“I had a really great vision of what the next Guitar Hero would be, and realized we didn’t have the resources to do it.”

First released in 2005, Guitar Hero is a very popular musical rhythm game series in which people use guitar shaped game controllers to control their inner rock music. Starting with just the guitar, the 2008 Guitar Hero World Tour introduced support for a four-man band consisting of vocals and drums.

The first game was a joint venture between RedOctane, the game controller company, and the music video game maker Harmonix. The first game was a huge success, RedOctane was acquired by Activision in 2007 and MTV Games acquired Harmonix. The latter went on to create Guitar Hero’s competitor Rock Band.

Over the years, there have been 25 releases including DJ Hero and Band Hero. The series has sold over 25 million copies worldwide and grossed over $2 billion in retail. Some are numbered releases, but three are band-specific and covered by Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen along with special guest bands. There are also releases created specifically for the Nintendo DS and mobile phones.

The last game released in the Guitar Hero series was Guitar Hero Live in 2015. Developed by FreeStyleGames, it was plagued by poor sales. Slight improvement over the previous games, in addition to the songs on the disc, more has been introduced from the so-called Guitar Hero TV, which has themed channels that play songs similar to the show. radio player.

With Microsoft acquires Activision, it’s very possible that some franchise that did not work out later could be revived. A new Guitar Hero game can be a lot of fun, especially if it goes back to a more tired and authentic, but clearly modernized formula. Personally, I really like the games, especially Guitar Hero 2, I feel the background music is very good. My favorite songs are “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin'”, “Mother”, “Them Bones”, Carry On Wayward Son”, “Freya” and “Crazy on You”. Some of the bonus songs are pretty good. Bang Camaro’s “Push Push (Lady Lightning)” is especially fun.

And who can forget Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock? Remember all the YouTube videos it made of Dragon Force “Through the Fire and Flames” players? Makes you wonder what 2022 or 2023 equivalent will be like.
