Activision on the lackluster sales of Call of Duty Vanguard: It Was WWII

Call of Duty: Vanguard and Activision Blizzard just can’t take a break. Although it is best selling game in 2021, Activision is still dissatisfied with the performance of the game. Who did you identify as the perpetrator? Second World War.

The company recognizes that the franchise is at least still one of the most successful entertainment franchises, but their bounty for 2021 hasn’t lived up to their expectations. In your Annual report to investorsActivision Blizzard wrote, “The game’s WWII setting didn’t resonate with some of our community.”

Every IGN Call of Duty review

Back in November, we reported that GameIndustry.biz, in partnership with PAX and EGX concluded that people weren’t playing Vanguard because they were too busy playing other games. In fact, World War II was even mentioned, with 24% of respondents saying they weren’t interested in games set during that time either.

The company also says there was a lack of “innovation” in the mainline 2021 Call of Duty game, although it’s unclear exactly what that means.

Additionally, Activision Blizzard’s 2021 was marred by high-profile sexual discrimination and it’s been reported that Activision Blizzard is facing even more complaints. This time to expedite the company’s sale to Microsoft to avoid the fallout from reports of sexual misconduct.

Maybe the Recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will do better than Vanguard.

In our Review of the single player campaignwe called Call of Duty: Vanguard “highly polished” but “short” with a “lack of variety.”
