Judge Boyle set bail at $200,000 in cash, $250,000 in insurance bonds, or $250,000 in partial bond guarantees. Mr. Williams was released on Thursday after a cousin paid $17,500 to secure the relationship, according to Ms. Florio. The Bronx County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the amount.
Such arrangements are standard in criminal court, and a hearing was held to ensure that the money was from a lawful source.
Mr. Adams, who runs the campaign to improve public safety, is under increasing pressure to tackle violent crime. He released an ambitious public safety plan on Monday, builds on the revival of a disbanded crime-fighting police unit and also includes a number of requests from state lawmakers, including the adoption of a standard on how dangerous it is to bail — which he noted exists in every state except New York.
Many left-wing Democrats and civil rights lawyers have criticized Mr. Adams’ push to amend the bail law, and leaders in Albany did not immediately accept the idea. Governor Kathy Hochul, who has a good relationship with Mr. Adams, defended the bail law this week and she said changes were needed to the law several years ago. She added that she is open to looking at further changes based on the data.

Shontell Smith, the chief of staff for the Democratic leadership of the state Senate, responded to Mr. Adams’ comment with a text message. on Twittersays the bail law “does NOTHING for the suspect to be released.”
“JUDGE sets bail,” she wrote, adding, “I support and respect the officers who risk their lives every day, but bail has been applied.”
In response, Mr. Adams’ spokesman, Maxwell Young, said the mayor was referring to Judge Boyle being barred from considering, in determining whether Mr Williams should be kept without bail, whether he Is it dangerous to the community?
