A woman in the southwestern state of Karnataka has admitted murdering her 78-year-old adoptive mother because she claims she was being prevented from living the life she wanted, police said.
The son of the older victim, identified as Srinivas, discovered his mother Muniyamma dead at her home in the city of Sarjapur on Saturday morning, the Times of India newspaper reported.
Rogues allegedly entered the house at night and fatally hacked it, Chandramma, Muniyama’s 38-year-old adopted daughter, told Srinivas.
Local police arrived at the scene after being informed of the discovery and found the victim had been hit with a machete on the left side of her head.
Authorities, following investigations, suspected Chandramma’s involvement in the incident, but the adopted daughter repeated the story she told Srinivas after police arrested her.
While Chandramma initially maintained her innocence, she later confessed to the crime, according to Bangalore County Police Commissioner Mallikarjun Baladandi.
Chandramma decided to kill Muniyamma, who she found abandoned 38 years ago as a 7-month-old baby because her adoptive mother was preventing her from living the life she wanted, according to the report.
Further investigations are underway to determine Chandramma’s exact motive.
In a related story, a man in Ohio allegedly killed his mother and set the body on fire in the woods.
Toledo Police Department officers were conducting a welfare inspection on 71-year-old Nancy Lewton at her home in South Toledo on the evening of October 1 when they discovered the elderly woman’s body in a burned area behind her garage.
Nancy’s son Travis Lewton, 31, was arrested after the discovery.
The younger Lewton reportedly attacked his mother after she returned home from visiting a friend in Florida and choked her until she stopped breathing.
He then took the body to the ravine behind his home, stuffed it into a sewer pipe and set it alight, court documents showed.
Travis reportedly contemplated killing his mother about a week before the murder.
He was charged respectively with aggravated homicide, murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, tampering with evidence and misappropriation of a corpse, local media outlet WTOL 11 reported.
The motive behind the murder was unclear, but neighbors claimed Travis “fought” as a young man.
