A woman who grew up unaware she had a long-lost sister has tracked down her sibling after they were separated more than 50 years ago.

Diane Ward, 58, was put up for adoption in the US as a baby and moved to the UK in 1999 with her husband Colin.

Curious about her roots in the States, she bought a MyHeritage DNA kit, which eventually revealed she had a second cousin who she messaged online.

After their initial greeting, Diane from Devon was amazed to find that she had a sister whom she has now tracked down in Arizona.

They now had their first meeting via Zoom.

Diane said: “When I first spoke to her on Zoom, it was just an amazing feeling – it was like I found my other leg.

“When I bought the kit I just thought it would be kinda cool to see if I’m quarter German or have some Irish blood in me.

“I didn’t even know of their existence. My mother had me when I was 18 and I was placed in an adoptive family.

“I only had her first name to go on, which was pretty common, so it was really difficult to go from there.

“But all my life I’ve always tried to find out more information.”

Though they were unaware of each other’s existence, the couple grew up close in Michigan.

They have a lot in common — including the fact that they were both put up for adoption by their birth mother.

Next month Diane will make the 5,000 mile journey to Mary’s beach house for a long awaited reunion and both sisters are over the moon.

She added: “[When we chatted on Zoom] It was love at first sight. We just clicked and hit each other straight away.

“Her husband overheard me and said we were very alike. He turned to her and said, “Yes, that’s your sister.

“We both have a sarcastic, dark sense of humor.

“I’m just so grateful I bought the kit. Without it I wouldn’t have known.

“I’m so excited to see Mary next month.

“We just go to the beach, get a tan and fix the world.”
