Mediahuis Ireland, the owner of the Irish Independent, is cutting jobs in its commercial department following a strategic review.

The publisher will start a structured social program in the coming weeks to reduce the workforce in sales and sales operations, according to a company statement.

Chief Commercial Officer Karen Preston told employees Thursday that the group had undertaken a “full strategic review” of its commercial function.

The review covered sales, sales operations, advertising operations, product, offering, strategic planning and communications.

“Against the backdrop of macroeconomic influences and changing consumer behavior, our goal is to continue to offer market-leading advertising solutions alongside an exceptional customer experience,” she said.

“As such, we need to ensure we have the right products, service model, processes and capabilities in place to support existing and evolving customer needs,” added Ms. Preston.

She said the group will be consulting and engaging with employees in the coming weeks as it seeks “a headcount reduction across distribution and sales operations through a structured layoff program.”

“Our vision is to evolve into an industry-leading, future-ready sales organization with investments in new resources, technology, capabilities and systems delivered through process refinement and divestment of some functions,” said Ms. Preston.

“We appreciate the impact of this transition on those directly involved and as management we will do our utmost to communicate transparently and ensure the process is managed as efficiently as possible,” she added.

On Tuesday, News Ireland, the local arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp, confirmed it would cease publishing its daily online edition of The Times Ireland as part of a wider restructuring of its business here.

The move means the loss of four journalist jobs in Dublin from a 20-strong editorial team that produces The Sunday Times and Times Ireland. No non-editorial roles are lost.

Mediahuis acquired what was then Independent News & Media in 2019.
