After I entered a Facebook raffle to win a house and a car, I vowed never to play €100 like that again

Whenever my dad and I are in the pub, the conversation sometimes turns to what we could do with a EuroMillions win. He would travel the world forever; I would spend the lot on houses with a sea view and spend the winter in Australia. Last week Dad said something that popped into my head. “I will never play the lottery,” he said. “You can keep your luck. I do not need it. Just don’t visit me with bad luck.” What he meant was that unless tragedy or calamity struck him, he would assume that life would be fine for him. There is definitely something to that.

And yet somehow I’m trained to chase happiness and happiness. longing for a stroke of luck; wishing to be pushed sideways by an exciting career advance; dreaming of something random and unexpected landing in my lap.
