The Chair of Limerick ICMSA has again appealed to the Gardaí to “intervene” in the increasing number of “confrontations” between organized gangs of invaders and farmers before the “situation escalates into a tragedy”.
ohn Bateman said the number and intensity of these standoffs is increasing and he fears it is only a matter of time before a very serious incident occurs.
Mr Bateman said ICMSA was aware of incidents in a semi-circle around Patrickswell, Crecora, Meanus, Fedamore and Croom where farmers who challenged groups of men entering their land were directly threatened by “a farmer being told he should choose a site in his own yard where he would like to be buried”.
“We are monitoring these incidents and there is absolutely no doubt that they are increasing in frequency and aggressiveness. ICMSA is aware of a recent incident in this part of Co Limerick where a farmer challenged two men who were suspected of trespassing.
“Words were exchanged and when this farmer returned to his family home, six of these individuals were waiting for him and they continued to threaten and intimidate him.
“Of course there is a certain amount of organisation, coordination and scouting here; Otherwise they would not know where the farmer lived.
“The farmers in these areas are afraid for their families’ safety, and when people are afraid for their families’ safety and not sure whether they can rely on the police or the law, then we are treading on very dangerous ground.” said the Limerick ICMSA chair.
Mr Bateman said he was personally aware of instances where the Gardaí in Bruff and Newcastle West “were contacted to come to these incidents and nobody arrived for more than three hours”.
“If the farmers think they’re going to be left alone, they’re going to organize and they’re going to help each other and we’re going to get into a situation very quickly where people are uniting in these standoffs and we’re going to see escalations — it’s not Scenario that someone desires, but it’s almost inevitable,” concluded Mr. Bateman.
