A British laborer arrested by Russia-backed separatists in Ukraine and accused of being a mercenary has died, an official in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) said today.
aul Urey, 45, was arrested in late April in southeastern Ukraine and charged with “mercenary activities” by separatists in the DPR, a breakaway entity recognized only by Russia, Syria and North Korea.
Daria Morozova, who holds the title of Human Rights Ombudsman in the DPR, said on social media that Urey suffered from diabetes, as well as respiratory, kidney and cardiovascular problems.
“For our part, despite the seriousness of the alleged crime, Paul Urey was provided with appropriate medical attention. However, given the diagnoses and the stress, he passed away on July 10,” she said.
Urey and another Briton, Dylan Healy, were arrested by the Russian military in late April. The leader of the Presidium Network, a non-profit support group that Urey was in touch with, told ITV News in May that he had diabetes.
Two other Britons and a Moroccan captured in the battle for Ukraine have been sentenced to death in the DPR for mercenary activities.
Britain’s BBC quoted Presidium Network founder Dominik Byrne as saying Urey was a humanitarian volunteer who was arrested at a checkpoint in southern Ukraine.
“This is worrying news, but has not yet been verified by any authority and investigations to determine the truth are ongoing,” Byrne said after reporting Urey’s death.
