The climatic diet is a nutritious diet that focuses on plant-based foods and reduced meat consumption. dr Alona Pulde created a seven-day meal plan that includes chicken and bean patties with mashed potatoes and broccoli, as well as vegan bolognese and pasta.

dr Pulde said: “A climate-controlled diet can improve health and save our planet. The main goal is to reduce animal products and eat more plant-based foods as they have a lower carbon footprint.”

That means meat and dairy lovers don’t have to eliminate these foods from their diets entirely. Instead, diet is about being aware of the carbon impact of the food you eat and choosing eco-friendly options like seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.

What Are the Health Benefits of the Climatarian Diet?

From reducing the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol to improve mental health and simply extend our lifespans, here are the top five benefits of the Climatarian diet:

Lose weight and maintain a healthy weight – People who eat meat are three times more likely to be obese than vegetarians and nine times more likely than vegans. Obesity, in turn, increases the risk of heart disease by up to 28%. Choosing whole plant-based foods that are high in fiber, water, and nutrients and lower in fat, sugar, and salt will help you lose and maintain weight.

Reduces high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol – A plant-based diet has been shown to reduce the risk of blood pressure by 34% and bad cholesterol by up to 30%.

Improves mood and reduces depression – A diet high in red or processed meat, refined grains, high-fat dairy, and sweets has been linked to an increased risk of depression. Meanwhile, a diet high in fruits and vegetables lowers your risk of depression and improves your mood.

Promotes the health of your skin – Plant-based whole foods are very rich in nutrients, including antioxidants that help keep skin looking younger and healthier, reduce blemishes and improve acne.

Help Live Longer – Switching to a plant-based diet might reduce this both mortality and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 10% and 70% respectively by 2050.

Here are the top questions that can help you make better climate choices to reduce carbon emissions.

Where can I incorporate beans, lentils and peas into my diet? These are also eco-friendly options tasty and nutritious can replace meat like beef in your meal to get you up to 74% closer to meeting your carbon emissions goals.

Can I try whole grains instead of refined grains? Choosing brown rice over white and whole wheat or lentil pasta over refined alternatives not only improves your health but also your carbon footprint. Whole grains like oats, barley, wheat, and rice generally use less water than other crops, with the added benefit of not requiring additional energy to process them.

Can I buy loose instead of boxed? 30-40% of food ends up in landfills, producing toxic greenhouse gases like methane. Buying in bulk, planning ahead and buying only what you need can help reduce food waste, relieve our overflowing landfills and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

How can I avoid plastic packaging? Buying more minimally processed foods means you are healthier and can also reduce plastic packaging to lower your carbon footprint.

Although the climatarian diet has many health and planetary benefits, Dr. Matthew Lederman: “Don’t force yourself on the climatarian diet because it rarely produces long-term results.”

He advises: “Instead, try to address any of your underlying needs, such as the need for more information, support, or reassurance. Those on the Climatarian diet or any other diet have just addressed the underlying needs that are preventing them from changing their behaviors in the first place.”
