Airbnb is making its “biggest change in a decade” and will be a hit with intrepid explorers.

That’s because the vacation rentals platform is overhauling the way you can search for accommodation, making it easy to find some of the coolest and quirkiest places to stay.

We’re talking boats, caves, tree houses, castles and even windmills. Are you looking for a lakeside location, a breathtaking view or a pool that will make all your Instagram followers green with envy? You are also taken care of, because there are 56 categories to choose from.

You can also choose a destination or simply search for the types of homes and features you are looking for and add a bit more adventure when planning your next trip.

The platform says there are over four million unique homes included in the categories, so you’re not short of ideas.

The idea is that the categories sort homes based on what makes them unique rather than destination, giving people the opportunity to discover places they might not otherwise have found.

The brand says it aims to “alleviate overtourism by reallocating travel to new places beyond the same popular destinations.”

It’s not the only change coming to the platform. Vacationers can also take advantage of “Split Stay” and book multiple homes for longer trips, as well as the new AirCover, which essentially offers booking and check-in protection.

This includes the Get What You Booked Guarantee, which gives you three days to report an issue if you think your listing is not as advertised. Once you report your issue, Airbnb will try to find you a similar or better place to stay, or offer you a refund.

Speaking of the changes, Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky said: “The way people travel has changed forever. That’s why we’re introducing the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade.

“First, people are more flexible about where they live and work, so we created a new way of searching with Airbnb categories. Second, people take longer trips, so we created Split Stays to give you more options by splitting your trip between two properties. And third, we’re introducing AirCover for guests, so you can book with confidence knowing Airbnb has your back.”

The new changes will roll out globally this week. Visit for more information.
