1. Plan ahead

You may have heard that waiting until the last minute to book flights can be a handy money-saving tip, but that’s not always the case. In fact, the opposite may be true; The closer to take-off time, the more likely prices are to increase, especially if the flight is already heavily booked. Want to place the odds in your favor? Booking up to eight weeks in advance is most likely the cheapest time to book.

2. Avoid peak times

Multi-day flying can save you money, but if you can’t be flexible with your travel dates, that doesn’t mean you need to splurge. For example, choosing night flights can be cheaper than during the day. Also consider your departure airport – if there’s an alternative nearby, compare prices, as it’s possible that simply changing your departure point means cheaper fares.

3. Three is a crowd

Traveling in a large group? Airline algorithms often try to group you all together when you’re searching for a flight, which can mean you’ll pay more for certain seats. Booking your own seats can be time-consuming, but if you’re on a tight budget then you can put the extra effort in.

4. Consider one-way fare

Round-trip fares are often the most cost-effective, but it’s still a good idea to consider whether booking your two flights separately could save you some extra cash.

5. Sign up for the newsletter

Airlines often share their latest offers, discounts, and other bargains on social media platforms or exclusively for subscribers to their newsletter. If you know you’re planning a vacation, it’s a good idea to sign up for these so you can prepare for the savings to come. (The Mirror travel newsletter could be a great place to start!).
