Melanie Sykes’ gondolier ride has boosted Venice’s tourism industry – as women flock to the Italian city in search of love.

Or her colleague and partner Alan Carr claims, anyway.

Comics, who co-hosted the Radio 2 broadcast with Mel, said that the couple’s romantic meeting sparked a frenzy of excitement.

“I called her and said, ‘I hope you get paid by the Venice tourist board,’” he laughs.

“She’s great, he’s great… The usual amount of women: ‘Call me for a flight to Venice now.’ Woah!

“All they needed was Andrea Bocelli coming in a gondola and it was like: ‘Let’s go to Venice!'”

Mel, 51, began a romance with Riccardo Simionato, 24, after he paddled her around the canals of Venice during a six-day vacation in October 2020.

The pair were still dating last September and mother of two Mel, who has been married twice, said she “has been through a lot of fun” with Riccardo.

He flew to the UK to spend time with her again in September.
