Rangnick questions VAR decisions after Man Utd loss at Arsenal
Alan Shearer questioned what’s happening on the Manchester United Training grounds with their underperforming stars showing they have “zero knowledge” when it comes to pressing.
Ralf Rangnick was hired as interim boss in December last year, with a glowing reputation as the “godfather of counter-pressing” with the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. It was hoped at the time that the German could pass on his wisdom to a force that had become lazy and lethargic under his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
But with just four games left of his stint in the dugout, the Red Devils still resemble a shell of a First League Team and are miles from the pace when it comes to true top flight contenders. United’s 3-1 defeat against arsenal has effectively confirmed that they will miss the top 4 and the top 4 Champions League the associated qualification.
Following the soft surrender vs Liverpool in the middle of the week. However, any hopes of a positive reaction were dashed in the opening game as the Gunners took a 2-0 lead and overwhelmed their opponents.
Cristiano Ronaldo got the visitors back in the game but Granit Xhaka’s thunderbolt in the second half ensured the points legitimately stayed in north London and United had to conduct another post-match autopsy.
Rangnick has been very critical of the players available to him during his five-month tenure but looked inward on Saturday and admitted he was unhappy with his work: “I’m not happy with the number of points or the way how we defended,” he told TV2.

And Premier League record goalscorer Sheared drew no punches in his assessment of the Arsenal debacle, questioning what United players are taught, particularly when it comes to how to pressurize opposing players when they aren’t the have balls

“New manager, they got hit by Liverpool, changed staff – Harry Maguire left out – so I think ‘there’s going to be a little reaction, certainly in the first 20 or 30 minutes and there wasn’t anything,'” Shearer continued BBC ‘s game of the day.
“Within three minutes you had three big mistakes: Varane and Telles make one and you also have one from Dalot letting Tavares go. There was no pressing, no organization, zero understanding of when or how to press in this team, probably because they don’t know how to do it or they don’t work on it at all in training.
“They don’t know how or when to do it … what they’re doing on the training ground I don’t know because it doesn’t seem like they’re doing much in terms of pressing.”
