Aled Jones reveals why making The Masked Singer was ‘liberating’

Aled Jones has said making The Masked Singer was “liberating” and a “joy” because it gave him the opportunity to sing different material.

The Welsh singer and radio presenter, 51, was revealed to be Traffic Cone on the popular ITV series earlier this year.

He dazzled the judges with a rendition of Rupert Holmes’ Escape (The Pina Colada Song) before being unmasked in a double elimination in the semifinals, alongside Destiny’s Child star Michelle Williams, who turned out to be the voice behind Rockhopper.

Jones told the PA news agency: “I loved it. It was pretty liberating for me to sing stuff that I would never do on TV.

“I can’t imagine for a minute that the Pina Colada song will be on Songs of Praise anytime soon.

“The Masked Singer was just a joy and a lot of fun. For me it was definitely not a singing competition or anything… and you know I miss the cone.

“On tour the cone pops up a little bit now… and people’s faces are just kind of, you know, they love it. It was a real pleasure to do this.

“Unfortunately after the third week I didn’t hide my voice very well, the first week I kept everyone guessing, the third week the whole nation was just saying ‘Yes, that’s Aled Jones’.”

Jones can be heard on a new Classic FM podcast called Classical Dreams, launched in conjunction with World Sleep Day, which is a collection of “soothing stories” designed to help listeners fall asleep.

Launching with four episodes, other names include Alexander Armstrong, Moira Stuart and Myleene Klass, with each story focusing on locations that have inspired famous pieces of classical music, including Vienna, Venice and The Appalachian Trail.

Jones said: “Having been on tour for almost three weeks now, sleep is something that is so important. When you’re lying in bed after giving a concert but knowing that you have a concert the next day, you literally wish you could sleep.

“When I heard about this idea I just thought this would be a fantastic thing for me to do to listen to myself, even to fall asleep, you know, and I’ve been listening to a couple of the podcasts now and that really does something on the tin.” stands.

“Listen, and even the breathing exercises at the beginning is something I took for granted. But actually, when you train your mind to do this, it’s amazing how relaxed you feel.”

Philip Noyce, Editor-in-Chief of Classic FM, said of the podcast: “Alexander, Moira, Myleene and Aled are the perfect presenters to launch the podcast and we are proud to have created a beautiful series to give our listeners a moment which will bring calm ‘busy life.’

Jones’ daughter, actress Emilia Jones, was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at this year’s Bafta Awards for the film Coda. At the star-studded ceremony, she also performed folk star Joni Mitchell’s ballad Both Sides Now, a song from her performance in the film.

He said: “I was obviously nervous for her because it’s the Royal Albert Hall, but she’s got nerves of steel.

“I was with her in the morning before the event, listened to the sound check there and stuff like that. I admire her so much, but more than anything I love the fact that she is an amazing person.”

Classical Dreams episodes are exclusively available on Global Player.
