Alex Jones fined $4.1 million over false Sandy Hook claims

Alex Jones, the conspiracy theorist and founder of right-wing website InfoWars, must pay $4.1 million in damages to the parents of a 6-year-old boy killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre, according to a jury in Austin, Texas. ordered in the defamation trial on Thursday.

Jones had repeatedly made false claims that the school shooting was a hoax and crisis actors were involved. During the nine-day trial, Jones admitted the shooting was “100% real.”

The $4.1 million award was far less than the $150 million sought by plaintiffs Scarlett Lewis and Neil Heslin. The jury has yet to decide how much Jones should pay in punitive damages to the couple, whose son was among 20 schoolchildren killed in the Newtown, Connecticut, massacre.

Lewis and Heslin sued Jones for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. They described the mental suffering, death threats and harassment they endured from Jones’ audience.

Free Speech Systems, InfoWars’ parent company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a South Texas court on Friday. A separate lawsuit was filed by the Sandy Hook families, alleging that Jones was using Free Speech Systems as a shell company to sell assets millions to hide.

Evidence surfaced during the trial that InfoWars was at times making more than $800,000 a day. Alex Jones fined $4.1 million over false Sandy Hook claims
