Alexis Mac Allister shines for Brighton in the Premier League

Alexis Mac Allister hopes he got a taste of Qatar in the opening game at the Amex.

Not only because of the heat, because the temperatures rose to over 30 degrees.

He would also love it because he’s in the middle of the action if Argentina tackle the World Cup under similar conditions.

The Albion midfielder says he’s in great shape physically with a big year ahead.

He’s also enjoying the challenge of a central, fairly deep midfield role as part of the Seagulls’ encouraging start to the season.

So could he be out there in the heat of the midfield battle in Qatar?

“I hope so. And yes, it was hot today!” he said after the 0-0 win against Newcastle.

“It is important to be in Qatar, then in which position.

“It’s important for the national team and here to be on the pitch and then to help the team-mates where they need me, be it as a 10, 8 or 6.

“I’ll try to do my best.”

Albion might have brought out the best in Mac Allister with the task they gave him in midfield.

He loves to be on the ball and is an underrated ball owner.

At the same time, his goal return in the open game probably hasn’t reached what was expected when he first arrived from Argentina.

On Saturday, no player had more than his 64 touches, although that number was equaled by three defenders – Joel Veltman, Dan Burn and Kieran Trippier.

Mac Allister said: “It’s different than what I’ve been used to for a while.

“But it’s a position I like and I think I can do it well.

“My teammates and the coaches help me a lot every day to develop.

“It’s a job I can do comfortably.

“I like to always be in contact with the ball.

“In this position, I will be constantly in contact with the ball.

“I make a lot of decisions and also help out defensively.

“I think defense is a part of the game where I’ve improved a lot lately.

“I’m feeling really good physically and I think that’s important for this big year to come.”

Argentina staff have benefited from their ‘new’ midfielder.

They made it clear they were pleasantly surprised by the development when he reported to the games late last season.

He said: “The first day when I arrived with the national team in May or June they said they had the idea to put me as number 5, as we call it – in Europe it’s number 6.

“But they could see qualities for me to do well.

“I’m very aware that it’s a new position for me and that I still have a lot to improve on.

“But I think I’m on the right track and I’m happy.”

Albion also appear to be heading in the right direction with just one defeat since March, away at Manchester City.

They grew stronger as the game progressed against Newcastle and should have contributed to their opening win at Manchester United.

That was after the opening 45 minutes which saw Toon endure a promising spell after enduring a brilliant start for their hosts.

Mc Allister said: “I think we didn’t play well in the first half.

“We made a lot of mistakes in possession.

“A lot of passes were played badly. But I think we were trying to play all the time, trying to do what we had planned, what we wanted to do.

“In the second half you saw the team spirit a bit more.

“We went a lot further up the field but unfortunately we couldn’t convert it into the goal we needed to win.

“We’re a bit frustrated because we wanted to win and we knew six points would have been the perfect start for us and I think we deserved it too.” A bit of frustration from that end.

“But in general we are in very good shape.

“We’ve been working hard physically and on the ideas of how we want to play.

“So we’re on the right track and we have to move on.” Alexis Mac Allister shines for Brighton in the Premier League
