Alfred Hitchcock’s humor influenced Dario Argento as much as his horror

Hitchcock’s hilarity gave Argento a tonal framework for his films. “I like that kind of British humor; it’s very subtle humor,” he said explain. “I want the humor in my movies to be like that, the old-fashioned way. Not the kind of humor that’s about a funny line or the proverbial here and there.” A softer and less interrupted sense of humour, especially British, in contrast to the strong style commonly found in Hollywood comedies.

Argento has a famous sense of humor not only in his films but also in people. French filmmaker Gaspar Noé said: “He’s funny like a boy trying to make twisted jokes. I’ve always loved his energy.” Roger “When he presents his films in film festivals or at different cinemas, he does monologues that can last an hour without getting any questions and people laugh. and applauded. He seemed to me like a born comedian.”

The Italian director may have been inspired by Hitchcock, but he took a very different approach to his actors. When Vulture When asked how he would direct his actors before a particularly humorous scene, Argento replied, “You know, I didn’t instruct them much. Those scenes played out just as they were supposed to. write out.” This is a far cry from Hitchcock’s approach. The master of suspense has a reputation for giving actors very little creative freedom. He once said that “the vast majority of actors… are stupid kids” and, unlike Argento, he puts very little faith in them (via Hitchcock / Truffaut).

They may not be alike in every way, but Argento and Hitchcock certainly share a sense of humour. Hitch’s signature charm and suspense has influenced the entire horror genre, but Argento’s work really does justice to OG. Alfred Hitchcock’s humor influenced Dario Argento as much as his horror
