Former Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov has been sanctioned by the UK government.

The message comes after that Everton cut ties with the Russian oligarch and his 512-foot yacht was impounded in Germany, although authorities have confirmed it has not been confiscated.

Usmanov, who owned shares in arsenal between 2007 and 2018, was placed on the UK sanctions list by the Foreign Secretary Liz Truss along with fellow oligarch Igor Shuvalov.

The couple will be subject to a full asset freeze and a travel ban. Shuvalov is a former Deputy Prime Minister of Russia under the current regime led by Wladimir Putin.

The Russian President ordered his troops to invade Ukraine last Thursday, while a bloody war rages in Eastern Europe.

“Our message to Putin and his allies was clear from day one – an invasion of Ukraine would have serious and crippling economic consequences,” Truss said Thursday night.

“The sanctioning of Usmanov and Shuvalov sends a clear message that we will meet oligarchs and individuals closely associated with the Putin regime and its barbaric war.

“We won’t stop here. Our goal is to cripple the Russian economy and starve out Putin’s war machine.”

everton ceased trading relations with Usmanov on Wednesday afternoon.

Russian company USM Holding sponsors the club’s training ground and has already paid for the naming rights to Bramley Moore Dock Stadium.

Everton’s new stadium is scheduled to open within the next three years.

“Everyone at Everton remains shocked and saddened by the appalling events in Ukraine,” the Toffees said in a statement.

“This tragic situation must be ended as soon as possible and any further loss of life must be avoided.

“The players, the coaching staff and everyone who works at Everton fully support our player Vitalii Mykolenko and his family and will continue to do so.

“The club can confirm that with immediate effect it has suspended all commercial sponsorship agreements with Russian companies USM, Megafon and Yota.”

Reports emerged on Wednesday evening that Usmanov’s luxury yacht had been measured by German authorities.

The Hamburg Economic Authority has since confirmed that no yachts were “seized” from the port, but has not denied that Usmanov’s boat was prevented from leaving port.

“No yachts were confiscated,” said a spokesman for the Hamburg Economic Authority on Thursday.

“A handover [of the yacht to its owner] is currently not planned. No yacht leaves the harbor that is not allowed to do so.”

Truss’ decision to announce further sanctions comes after pressure from the Labor leader Keir Starmer during the Prime Minister’s questions on Wednesday afternoon.

“Last week the Prime Minister said that [ Chelsea owner Roman] Abramovich threatened sanctions,” said Starmer in the lower house.

“He later corrected the record to say he is not. Well, why on earth isn’t he?”

Abramovich is yet to face sanctions but has announced he will sell Chelsea amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

A takeover of the European champion could be carried out by an American-Swiss consortium as early as Monday, with ongoing talks in the States.
