This Morning’s Alison Hammond disappointed attendees of Downing Street and Whitehall parties, when she hinted at having to miss her father’s funeral in Jamaica at the time.
The This Morning star is devastated by the passing of her father Clifford Hammond in 2020, just four months after her mother Maria passed away following a battle with liver and lung cancer.
She sat down with co-host Dermot O’Leary to discuss Partygate’s fine for attending illegal parties in Downing Street and Whitehall during the pandemic.
Dermot co-host asked guest Tom Swarbrick at what point trust in government would be “irreversibly lost”, which he said was “already there”.
The LBC presenter added: “I thought it was gone, but part of me wondered if it was two years ago and a lot of things are happening with the cost of living crisis and Ukraine. It feels like before, so to what extent?
“I think it’s very difficult to look at Boris Johnson and think he broke the rules, he didn’t understand them and he certainly wasn’t lying.”
Alison then cut in: “People will never forget the fact that they weren’t allowed to go to funerals. You will never forget that pain.
“You’ll remember what he did, but you’ll never forget how he made you feel.”
She then added emotionally: “I was unable to attend my father’s funeral. So many people were not allowed to see their families as they were dying. My trust is gone. I don’t know about the others. ”
Detectives are investigating 12 hit gatherings in Downing Street and Whitehall, including six events Boris Johnson is said to have attended.
The Prime Minister has yet to be notified of a fixed penalty but No10 has promised to confirm whether the Chancellor and head of civil affairs Simon Case have been fined.
Following her father’s death, Alison took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news, writing: “This is my real dad, Clifford Hammond, who passed away last week in Jamaica.
“I’m very sad that I won’t be able to do his funeral and sad that he’s not as much a part of my life as I would have liked, but I still have feelings of loss and emptiness.
“Sleep well dad, love leaves memories that no one can steal. RIP.”
She received sympathetic messages from her This Morning co-stars, including Holly Willoughy, who wrote: “Alison…sending you so much love.”
Ruth Langsford added: “So sad to hear that I love….send you love and a big hug.”
This Morning airs at 10 a.m. weekdays on ITV and ITV Hub.
