All road users, not just motorists, need to realize that they have a duty of care to others

Pedestrian protection is a piece of technology that delivers what it promises.

Usually part of a suite of safety aids, it alerts you when it detects someone walking or running near your car.

There are also cyclist detection systems in many cars, which I think activate quite often in urban areas.

If I have these two alerts available most weeks in test cars you would think I would feel safer wouldn’t you?

Well I do, but I still worry about crossing a bike lane or riding between segmented footpaths.

Although there are safety systems in cars, I’m always appalled by drivers who don’t pay attention to possible dangers.

It would be easy for me to blame those who lump bike lanes and pedestrian lanes all together in a criss-cross web or parallel cluster.

I often wonder if these planning decisions increase the risk of someone getting knocked off their feet or off their bike. Or is that just a slip?

Thankfully I didn’t witness anything of the sort, but I can tell you that a couple of times I was scared of what I was thinking.

It’s my own fault that I don’t always see possible problems.

But I also blame some pedestrians and cyclists who give the impression that the duty to give way to them rests solely with drivers.

This is not an attack on cyclists or pedestrians.

It’s a reminder that, regardless of the driver’s level of alertness and competence, other road users have a duty to show the same level of care and caution and not rush out of nowhere in front of you for a split second.

No system can cope with that. All road users, not just motorists, need to realize that they have a duty of care to others
