Almost half of adults are forgoing sleepovers this winter due to the cost of living crisis

More than four in 10 Irish adults plan to skip their nights out for the rest of the year due to cost of living pressures, new research shows.

Its figure paints a “bleak picture” for the pub trade heading towards Christmas, the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland (VFI) has said.

The organization predicts pubs will close due to rising operating costs, while others will reduce winter opening hours to limit energy bills.

Data from the CGA Cost of Living Consumer Pulse Survey has prompted the VFI to call for “urgent and substantial energy support for the hospitality industry” in Budget 2023.

CEO Paul Clancy said pubs cannot pass increases to customers who are already under financial strain.

The survey, conducted in Ireland and the UK in August, found that 42 per cent of Irish adults plan to go to pubs much less frequently between now and New Year’s Eve.

“The survey results paint a bleak future for Irish pubs, their staff and the communities in which they are often an important social centre,” said Mr Clancy, whose organization represents 4,000 pub owners.

“With 42 per cent of pub-goers expected to cut back on their visits due to cost of living pressures, it is vital that Treasury Secretary Paschal Donohoe provides urgent and substantial energy support for the pub trade in Budget 2023.

“Pubs cannot pass on price increases to customers who are already under financial strain and colossal energy costs will force pubs to close or reduce their winter hours.

“Lower footfall, coupled with an unprecedented rise in energy bills after 22 months of closure and Covid restrictions, means we are almost certainly considering closing many more pubs permanently,” Mr Clancy said.

93 percent of those surveyed stated that they expect higher household expenses in the coming months and are therefore going out less.

And this despite the fact that 70 percent of those surveyed said that eating or drinking out was the pleasure they looked forward to the most.
