Amazon will no longer provide up to seven days of paid time off (PTO) to workers who are ill with COVID-19, the company announced in an internal memo obtained by The edge (about CNBC). Starting Monday, Amazon is offering up to five days of unpaid excused leave, with the option for workers to use accumulated paid sick leave.
Amazon initially offered 14-day PTO at the start of the pandemic, but later a week shaved by this policy in accordance with updated Centers for Disease Control (CDC) guidance. The company now says workers with “confirmed” COVID-19 cases can request paid time off under their “standard sick leave policy,” regardless of vaccination status. It will also stop giving workers excused time off while waiting for their COVID-19 test results, citing the widespread availability of rapid tests.
Amazon is also adjusting some of its other COVID-19 policies. It sets its vaccination incentive Program that paid workers $40 for each dose of COVID-19 vaccine received and stopped notifying entire workplaces of positive COVID-19 cases “unless required by law.” Amazon has continued to adjust and adapt its policies as the pandemic has progressed Mask requirement ended for vaccinated and unvaccinated warehouse workers in February.
“The continued ebbing of the pandemic, continued availability of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments, and updated guidance from public health authorities signal that we can continue to safely align with our pre-COVID guidelines,” Amazon said in a statement. “We are closely monitoring the conditions and will continue to adjust our response as necessary.”
Amazon announced its updated policies just a day after LDJ5 Amazon warehouse in Staten Island, New York has completed its union election. The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) will count those votes on Monday, and if the store votes to unionize, it will become the second Amazon store to do so. Last month, a The nearby Staten Island warehouse voted to organize with the Amazon Labor Union (ALU) in a historic victory for workers.
