Amazon is spending more than $200 million on the Russo Bros. series Citadel.

The seven-episode series was estimated to have a budget of around $160 million, but the budget has grown with around $75 million in reshoots. The timing of the massive budget spending is especially alarming considering that the first season of “Lord of the Rings: The Mighty Rings” cost an estimated $465 million. It’s not that Amazon is hurting money or anything as Jeff Bezos makes over $2,537 every secondbut that’s still a big change to investing in a chain that may or may not see a return on investment.

THR reports that “Citadel” is a passionate project of Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, who believes deeply in the concept of a spy series that includes different characters from different countries. Unite to complete the ultimate mission. If it sounds like “The Avengers” but to spies, that’s because it’s by design. Unfortunately, when Russos was busy with “The Gray Man” and Amazon was less than thrilled with the first few scenes, creative conflicts arose which led to host Josh Appelbaum leaving the project along with the seasoned director. Brian Kirk (“Game of Thrones,” “Penny Dreadful”), directed five of the seven episodes, as did line producer Sarah Bradshaw.

David Weil of “Hunter” fame has been brought in to rewrite the series, and Thomas Sigel has been responsible for directing the reshoots. “Citadel” is currently in post-production and no tentative release date has been announced.
