Amazon plans to lay off 10,000 employees starting this week, new report says

Amazon plans to lay off about 10,000 employees in corporate and technology jobs as early as this week, the New York Times reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Mazon directly employs more than 5,000 people in Ireland but is indirectly responsible for 3,700 jobs in the country, the company said recently.

It is unclear whether the redundancies will affect Irish staff.

Amazon recently increased its workforce in Ireland by 500 this year after opening its first fulfillment center in the country at Dublin’s Baldonnell Business Park in August.

The 58,000m2 center contains millions of items that need to be picked, packed and dispatched to customers across Ireland and the rest of Europe. Tánaiste Leo Varadkar toured the new facility last month and announced its opening as “an important investment in our country.”

The job cuts will be focused on the e-commerce giant’s equipment unit, which houses its voice assistant Alexa, as well as its retail division and human resources division, where the overall layoffs also remain fluid, according to the report.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As of December 31 last year, Amazon had more than 1.6 million full-time and part-time employees and recently announced it would freeze hiring of company employees for the next few months.

The news comes just weeks after Amazon warned of a slowdown in growth for the busy holiday season, when it’s generating its highest sales, saying consumers and businesses would have less money to spend due to rising prices.

Amazon is the latest US company to slash its headcount to prepare for a potential economic downturn.

Last week, Facebook parent company Meta Platforms announced it would cut more than 11,000 jobs, or 13 percent of its workforce, to contain costs. Others are Twitter Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Snap Inc. owned by Elon Musk.

Amazon’s shares, which have lost about 40 percent of their value so far this year on a broader tech sell-off, briefly pared losses to trade up 2.4 percent at $98.38.
