Amber Heard fought back tears and bit her lip as she described the first time Johnny Depp allegedly hit her after laughing at his tattoo.
The actress told a jury at the former couple’s defamation trial in Virginia that she was “heartbroken” when Mr Depp slapped her three times in the face in an alleged assault that she said “changed her life”.
She claimed Mr Depp attacked her after she asked him to explain a “messy, faded” tattoo that read “Wino” which the court heard the actor had changed from “Winona forever” – a reference to his previous relationship with actor Winona Ryder – on “Wino forever”.
“He said it was called ‘Wino’. I thought he was joking and laughing, simple as that, I laughed when I thought he was joking and he slapped me in the face and I laughed because I didn’t know what else to do. I thought this must be a joke,” she explained.
“I didn’t know what was going on. I just stared at him and was still laughing, thinking he was going to start laughing to tell me it was a joke.
He said, “You think it’s funny, b***h, you think you’re a funny b***h?” and he hit me again and it was clear it wasn’t a joke anymore.
“As a woman, I have never been beaten like this. He hit me for no reason it seems and I missed the point. I just stared at him, I didn’t react or move or freak out or defend myself, I just stared at him, he hit me hard again.
Ms Heard said all she could do was stare down at the rug she was sitting on and admitted the blow itself did not cause her any physical harm.
“I didn’t know what to say, I didn’t know how to react. ‘God, did he just hit me?’
“I didn’t want this to be the reality, I know you can’t come back for this, you can’t hit a woman or a man or anyone, you can’t just hit someone. I knew it was wrong and I knew I had to leave him and it broke my heart because I didn’t want to leave him.”
Ms Heard, when she finally got up to leave, Mr Depp burst into tears.
“I had never seen a grown man cry,” she told the court.
“He said, ‘Sorry baby, I thought I put the monster away, I thought I killed it, I thought I put the monster away.”
Ms Heard said the couple were sitting and listening to music before the alleged attack and that Mr Depp was drinking and had “a jar full of cocaine on the table”.
“I realize this sounds weird, but it was an old jar of it,” she added.
Ms Heard previously told the court the couple had a “whirlwind romance” following the press tour for her 2011 film The Rum Diaries.
“It was beautiful … I felt like this man knew me and saw me in a way that no one else did.
“When I was with Johnny, I felt like I was the most beautiful person in the world. I felt seen.”
Ms Heard added that Mr Depp had shown “generous displays of affection” and that they had lived in “little bubbles of secrecy”.
“It felt like a dream, it felt like absolute magic,” she said.
“I fell head over heels in love with this man.”
Mr Depp argues that she defamed him in a comment published in December 2018 The Washington Post entitled “I spoke out against sexual violence – and faced the wrath of our culture. That needs to change.”
While Mr Depp is not named in the piece, his legal team argues that it contains a “clear implication that Mr Depp is a domestic abuser”, which they say is “categorically and demonstrably false”.
Mr Depp is seeking “not less than $50 million” in damages. Ms Heard has filed a $100 million counterclaim against Mr Depp for harassment and immunity from his allegations.
The court has already spent four days hearing evidence from Mr Depp, who said he was “obsessed with the truth” and claimed he was the victim of domestic violence.
The process goes on.
