TikToker advises solo travelers after Airbnb encounters

An American tourist was rocked on a trip to Edinburgh when a man tried to break into her Airbnb.

Kelsey Hansen was staying alone at the Airbnb in Abbeyhill when she heard a knock on the door and went to ask who it was.

Being careful not to open the door, she called out, “Who’s there?” and listened to his reply, reports Edinburgh Live.

“My apartment was at the top of the building. No way out and reason for others to be there,” Kelsey told her followers on TikTok.

“That evening I was alone getting ready to meet up with a friend and there was a knock on my door.

“There was no peephole, so I yelled through the door, ‘Who’s there?’

“I didn’t open the door or even consider that idea, but this man didn’t tell me what he was there for or what his name was and I asked him repeatedly.

“All he wanted was for me to answer my door, which I didn’t do.

“After about three minutes of this back and forth asking me why he was there, he left sounding really angry and stomping down the stairs.”

Kelsey decided to stay in a hotel for two nights after the nerve-wracking ordeal and now wants to buy a door handle alarm for future trips.

“It shook me a little, so I called the non-emergency hotline to report it just in case he would do it to other people, and I stayed in a hotel for two nights,” she said.

Kelsey spoke about her overall experience of a month in the Scottish capital and said she felt very safe overall.

“It was a lot of fun and an experience I will never forget,” she said.

“However, one thing happened that I wanted to talk about and what I might do next time and take with me, just to make me feel more secure in general.”

Kelsey shared her experience in an emotional video on TikTok about her solo travels recommending the city to others around the world.

But she said there was “one thing” she needed to mention before she would reveal what happened that day.
