America’s Got Talent star Michael Grimm, the fifth winner of the NBC music competition show, has been in the hospital with an undisclosed illness for more than a week. His wife Lucie Zolcerva-Grimm said the 44-year-old guitarist was sedated after being removed from the ventilator.
“It’s been an emotional journey … I know you all love Michael, and while I want to protect his privacy and his request not to disclose anything, we’re kind of in a situation,” Zolcerva-Grimm said said in an emotional Instagram video on Tuesday.
Zolcerva-Grimm said her husband “lacked energy” and was unable to perform before the onset of the illness. She added that doctors at various hospitals and emergency rooms “couldn’t figure out what was wrong with him” before the disease “took over” him on Memorial Day.
Grimm’s blood pressure shot up “from the drugs he was given,” and doctors drugged him and put him on a ventilator.
“We don’t know what’s going on,” she said through tears.
“Doctors were finally able to remove the ventilator today and he’s breathing on his own,” she added in Tuesday’s post. “However, his body has been through a lot in the last week. They still have him sedated so he doesn’t have seizures or stagnate due to fluctuating blood pressure.”
Zolcerva-Grimm said most of her husband’s scheduled June performances and his July 4 appointment have been canceled to give him “a chance” at recovery. She said after more than a week on a ventilator he will need physical therapy and surgery to repair his vocal cords.
Thanking the “phenomenal team of doctors and nurses” who took care of her husband, she said he’s “getting better” — but “it just takes time.”
