Amir Khan announces retirement from boxing

Amir Khan claims that despite his recent retirement announcement, Floyd Mayweather is still keen on arranging an exhibition fight between the two.

The former world champions have both hung up their gloves after glittering careers, with Mayweather still participating in unsanctioned exhibition fights, including his meeting with Don Moore on Saturday night. And although Khan has now quit the fight, the pair could meet in the ring after crossing paths in Dubai a few weeks ago, with Mayweather reportedly “excited” at the prospect.

Khan ended his career after losing to Kell Brook in his last appearance in February, while the American gave up at the top in 2017 with a win over UFC legend Conor McGregor. Since that massive crossover bout, Mayweather has taken on kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa and YouTube star Logan Paul in two major exhibition bouts, the latter of which garnered a million pay-per-view buys.

And speaking to TalkSPORT, Khan confirmed there’s still interest in a fight between him and Mayweather even though they can’t make it in their prime. The Brit’s fight with Brook was also late in both men’s careers but still drew massive interest and pay-per-view monies.

“You see, exhibitions are always happening,” Khan explained. “I met Floyd in Dubai the other day and there was some excitement there, he said ‘don’t retire, let’s do something, there’s something we can do’.

“I thought, ‘Maybe if it didn’t happen when we were both professional fighters, maybe it can happen as a show.’ Nobody wins, it’s just a little fun to give the fans a little entertainment.

“I think now with boxing that’s totally changed now where a lot of these fights are happening, social media people are fighting each other and a new door has been opened. People can just jump in after a week of training and fight!”

Mayweather must first prevail against his former sparring partner Moore at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. He couldn’t stop Paul when they fought last summer, with the 35lb weight difference between them being enough to keep the YouTuber from stopping despite thorough punches.

During the pair’s fighting career, Khan unsuccessfully attempted to face Mayweather in a sanctioned world title match. His closest came in 2014 when a public poll on the undefeated star’s account voted the Briton as a suitable next opponent, but the American settled on Marcos Maidana.

Khan had eyed another fight with Brook after being stopped in their grudge match, but even after invoking their rematch clause, he decided against it. “You’re just one punch away from being hurt, knocked down or killed,” he declared earlier this week.

“Even though I have the chips on my side, I’m happy to walk away and call it a day. You’re always one swipe away from getting hurt, that’s something I’ve always feared, I wouldn’t be there for the kids. There’s no point in making all that money and you’re not enjoying it.”
