Amusement park prepares for Hurricane Ian with some closures

Disney World (DIS) is preparing for the effects of Hurricane Ian and has announced a series of theme park and resort closures due to the storm.

The entertainment company’s website said Tuesday that it would be closing accommodations at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground, Copper Creek Cabins at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge, Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, and The Bungalows at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort.

The shelters are closed Wednesday through Friday, during which time Ian is expected to land on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Disney said it was contacting guests who had reservations during this period.

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will also cancel the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue. Visitors with tickets to the show will have their tickets automatically refunded and cancelled.

Disney theme parks are continuing to operate under normal conditions at this time. But the park closes Typhoon Lagoon, Winter Summerland Minigolf, and Fantasia Gardens Minigolf on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Disney also said on its website that it is not enforcing its cancellation policy until further notice, effective immediately. These include resort restaurants and in-park experiences such as Savi’s Workshop and Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Disney Springs remains open and operating under normal conditions, as do Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot.

On its website, Disney said of the upcoming weather situation, “We continue to put the safety of our cast and guests first and will update you as we monitor Hurricane Ian.”

Hurricane warnings have been issued for the west coast of Florida, including the Tampa Bay area. Due to the strength of the storm, evacuation orders were issued for several counties in the Tampa Bay area.

Ian is expected to increase in intensity over the next two days and is currently a Category 3 hurricane since it made landfall in Cuba early Tuesday morning.
