Young girl befriends sheep after bringing it back to life

An eight-year-old girl has formed an inseparable bond with a sheep after helping to nurse it back to health after it was rejected as a lamb by its mother.

Lacie Pattinson of Brough, Cumbria, found Lucky the lamb “near death” and took him home to “cuddle” him back from the cliff – and forged a friendship in the process.

The schoolgirl’s mother, Hayley Pattinson, 37, says Lacie is now Lucky’s best friend and even threw a party for the sheep to celebrate her first birthday.

Hayley explained: “Lacie’s grandfather keeps about 50 sheep and last spring, during lockdown, she joined Lucky.

“We found Lucky after her mother gave birth to her behind a water trough. She was rejected by her mother and was almost dead when we found her.

“Lacie put them in a box, took them home and put them in front of the fire.

“It didn’t take long for Lucky to regain consciousness and Lacie nursed her back to health. That’s how she got her name. She gave Lucky the bottle and kept her warm by wrapping her in blankets around the house and giving her lots of cuddles.

“Lacie tells people that the reason Lucky survived is because she loves her so much. It’s so special to see their relationship and it’s easy to tell that they will be friends for life. We have to bring Lacie down to visit Lucky every day. She even threw a birthday party for Lucky’s first birthday recently.”

The little girl brought her best friend a gift, a balloon and a birthday card to celebrate her special day – and even sang Happy Birthday to the sheep.

Lacie also picked up some digestive biscuits and an extra portion of feed to spoil the special sheep.

Hayley added: “As soon as Lucky hears us coming, she runs to the gate to be ready to meet Lacie. Lucky loves Lacie as much as Lacie loves her favorite sheep. You are both so lucky to have each other.

“I think Lucky has helped Lacie get through lockdown. We live in such a rural area that as it is we don’t see too many people and during lockdown it was even worse.

“You have formed such a beautiful friendship. They run towards each other as soon as they see each other.”

And Lucky seems just as excited about their friendship, as the sheep “always cuddles up” when Lacie pets her.

Hayley said: “Lucky is definitely more tame because of her friendship with Lacie. She snuggles up when Lacie snuggles her, licks and kisses her, and even nibbles her ear, which Lacie finds hilarious.

“After we first found Lucky, I didn’t expect her to make it. But we’re so happy she made it because of the amazing relationship she has with Lacie.”
