A prisoner charged with murder has escaped from custody with a prison officer.

Casey White was last seen at the Lauderdale County Jail in Alabama, United States, on Friday, before disappearing with warden Vicki White – who was due to retire the same day.

She was armed with a 9mm pistol which authorities fear has now fallen into the hands of Mr White, who is 6ft 9in and believed to be dangerous.

Ms White had claimed she would take him to the local court for a mental examination at around 9.30am, although it later emerged that such an examination was not planned.

She had also said she would seek medical attention after stopping him because she wasn’t feeling well.

Officials say the pair are not related, but it was initially unclear whether Ms White, the county’s assistant director of corrections, aided the escape or was taken hostage.

The US Marshals Service is offering up to $10,000 for information leading to Mr. White’s recapture and Ms. White’s whereabouts, the service said Sunday.

A warrant was issued for the officer’s arrest for allowing or facilitating the first-degree escape, Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said Monday.

He added that Ms White did not arrive at the place where she was supposed to receive medical attention.

Colleagues tried to reach her phone but it went straight to voicemail.

It was then established that Mr White was not returned to prison.

Mr Singleton said it was likely that Ms White helped the prisoner escape.

The sheriff told CNN on Monday: “If she did it voluntarily and there are all indications that she did it.

“I think we’re trying to hold on to the last glimmer of hope that maybe for some reason she was threatened and did so under duress … but you would feel absolutely betrayed.”

He had previously said there was “under all circumstances” a danger from the prisoner, who was in prison for capital murder and had “nothing to lose”.

Video footage is said to show that Ms White’s 2013 Ford Taurus patrol car was abandoned in a shopping mall parking lot.

Mr Singleton’s office have reviewed all security footage from the area but the couple have not yet been seen boarding another vehicle.

The sheriff added that there was no indication the two had any sort of personal relationship.

He explained Ms White, who had worked in the department for around two decades, had filed pension papers the week before and Friday was her last day.

The official is a widow and has no children.

She lived with her mother, Pat Davis, for five weeks after she sold her house.

she said CNN subsidiary WAAY : “As a mother, I didn’t know how to act because at first I thought it was a mistake and then when I was sure it was, it was just disbelief.”

Ms Davis added that her daughter never discussed work and made no mention of retirement or Mr White.

“I didn’t know about him… we just want her back. That’s all we want.”

Mr. White was serving 75 years for multiple crimes committed in Limestone County in 2015, including home invasion, carjacking and a police chase, according to the US Marshals Service.

In 2020, he confessed to the 2015 killing of a woman in Rogersville, Alabama, according to Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly.

He then pleaded not guilty.

Mr Singleton said the prisoner previously planned to escape and take a hostage in 2020 but this was foiled.
