Analysts suggest that the iPhone 14 will have an autofocus front camera

Apple’s next iPhones could have an improved selfie camera with autofocus capabilities and a larger aperture, according to Apple a prediction by well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Unlike Apple’s current fixed-focus design, an autofocus-capable front camera could push the iPhone 14 to capture clearer images even when you’re closer or farther from the camera. A larger aperture – Kuo predicts f/1.9 versus the iPhone 13’s f/2.2 – would add a touch of background blur and let in more light, making it better for nighttime selfies or something FaceTime portrait mode.

Kuo and others have predicted that Apple will be get rid of the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro and opt for a hole punch design instead. While that means Apple would have to fit the improved camera into a smaller space, it’s not an unprecedented challenge – the selfie camera is on Samsung’s Galaxy S22 has auto focus and lives in a circular crop. It’s worth noting that while Samsung has had autofocus front cameras for years, this isn’t a common trait among other manufacturers. Google’s selfie cam and the latest flagships from OnePlus are firmly in focus.

Kuo’s tweet states that the improved front-facing camera could come to “four new iPhone 14 models,” meaning Apple won’t be using better selfies as a selling point for its Pro phones (though that wouldn’t have been a huge surprise given that) . better camera systems were a mainstay of the Pro line). That’s particularly good to hear amidst rumours that the iPhone 14 Pro will get A16-series processors, while current-gen A15 processors will power the regular models, and that Apple will do the same Increase the rear camera resolution for its high-end phones.

While I find the iPhone’s current front-facing camera perfectly usable, it could probably use some attention. Apple brought its night mode to the selfie camera with the iPhone 12, but it hasn’t improved its aperture since the iPhone 6 (although that is of course not the end of all things, the be-all and end-all of quality).
