Former world number one Andy Murray has said he will donate his winnings from tennis tournaments in 2022 to relief efforts for children affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Millions of people – mainly women and children – have now fled Ukraine since the start of Russia’s invasion on February 24, the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR said on Tuesday.

Russia calls its actions in Ukraine a “special operation”.

“More than 7.5 million children are at risk with the escalating conflict in Ukraine,” Murray, UNICEF UK ambassador, said on Twitter.

“Critical education continues, so UNICEF is working to facilitate access to learning for displaced children, as well as assist with the restoration of damaged schools, along with equipment and furniture.” to replace.

“I will be donating the earnings from my prize money for the rest of the year, but anyone in the UK can support UNICEF’s humanitarian response by donating to their appeal. I.”

The ATP, WTA, ITF and four Grand Slams said on Tuesday they would jointly donate $700,000 for humanitarian relief and support the Ukrainian tennis federation.

Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray received a wild card for Indian Wells this month, his first tournament since reuniting with former coach Ivan Lendl.
