Andy Murray is part of the British Davis Cup team because Jack Draper is out

Andy Murray has been included in Britain’s Davis Cup squad for the group stage of the competition in Glasgow next month, but there’s still no room for rising star Jack Draper.

Murray joins Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans and world number one doubles Joe Salisbury in the line-up for Britain’s games against the United States, Kazakhstan and the Netherlands at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

Draper, 20, has moved up the rankings from outside the top 250 to 55 this season, but Murray, eight places up, gets the nod to compete for Wimbledon semi-finalist Norrie and Evans in singles at 23rd.

A fifth player will be added later, giving Draper another chance to stake his claim alongside doubles specialist Neal Skupski, who won his sixth title of the season with Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof in Montreal on Sunday.

Smith said: “I’m delighted to appoint such a strong team to take on the other three nations in Glasgow next month. We have really good strength and depth at the moment and selections have been tougher than ever.

“The Emirates Arena has historically been a brilliant venue for our team and has created some of the best atmospheres and memories our players have experienced.

“We’re extremely excited to bring the Davis Cup back there for the first time in over four years and look forward to a packed stadium that will make our team a good deal of noise.”

Murray will return to the competition for the first time since 2019 after missing the last edition last November when Britain lost to Germany in the quarter-finals.

He’s guaranteed a hero’s welcome at home as Britain play their games on September 14, 16 and 18.

“It’s always something special to play in a Davis Cup duel in front of your home crowd,” said the 35-year-old. “Some of the best moments of my career have come when I represented my country in the Davis Cup, so it means a lot to be part of the team again.

“Obviously it’s exciting to see the competition return to Glasgow. We’ve had some brilliant results there in the past and this is another chance for us to make even more history. We have a strong team and we will do everything we can to bring victory to the fans and secure a place in the final.”

In the latest re-launch of the historic competition, four cities will host groups of four teams, with the top two finishers in each pool coming to a round of 16 shootout in Malaga in November. Andy Murray is part of the British Davis Cup team because Jack Draper is out
