Andy Murray survived a thrilling encounter with longtime rival Stan Wawrinka to reach the second round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

The Scot won the opening set in a tie-break as momentum between the two veterans swung freely.

However, the second set went to Wawrinka as Murray contracted with muscle spasms.

In the decisive set, the 35-year-old then showed a lot of courage and tenacity, fought back from an early break and won 7: 6 (5), 4: 6, 6: 4.

Murray confirmed the game’s physicality in his on-court interview.

“In this weather, the place is quite lively. Physically, I feel tired,” he said.

“I had some issues with cramps during the game, as did Washington, so I need to get that under control.

“I tried to take the ball a little bit more and score points at the net. I wasn’t that successful when I came up, but the intent was there. I was a bit more offensive on the second serve. In the last game I was just fighting and trying to find a way.”

The win sets up a second-round clash with England’s Cam Norrie, who was tested by Denmark’s Holger Rune in his opening match.

The path of the world number 11. to victory mirrored Murray’s as he eventually defeated his youthful opponent 7-6(5) 4-6 6-4.
