Andy Murray was eliminated by Mikael Ymer in the first round of the Citi Open

Andy Murray fought hard but lost to Mikeal Ymer 7-6 4-6 6-1 in his opening match at the Washington Citi Open.

Murray was the first to put points on the scoreboard after an opening 19-ball rally, but it was the 23-year-old Swede who broke the Scot’s serve and won the first game.

It was the start of a head-to-head encounter that saw Murray fail to convert four set points as the world No. 115 prevailed in a grueling 80-minute first set.

Elsewhere, Emma Raducanu’s professional doubles debut ended in straight sets as the Brit and fellow teenage girl Clara Tauson lost 6-4, 6-1 to Romania’s Monica Niculescu and Czech Lucie Hradecka in the opening round.

The US Open champion and her 19-year-old Danish counterpart failed to collect any points as they quickly lost the first game to their more experienced challengers.

Just ten minutes had passed before Niculescu and Hradecka claimed third place in a row before quickly winning a fourth. Raducanu and Tauson finally managed the break to win game five and seemed to settle into a more comfortable partnership as they won two at the trot.

But they were easily outplayed by their opponents, who won the first set on their third opportunity when Niculescu’s forehand sped past an unlucky Raducanu’s outstretched racquet.

A better start to the second set saw Raducanu and Tauson equalize in a game each before the superiority of their more experienced opponents soon showed, earning the break in game four when they ran away with the set and Niculescu the match with a volley sealed to end Raducanu’s first foray into the format.
