Angelica Ross, known for her performances in Pose and American Horror Story, will join the Chicago cast this September for her Broadway debut as leading lady Roxie Hart.
This will make Ross the first transgender woman to portray the role on Broadway. The casting announcement comes months later L Morgan Lee became the first openly transgender performer being nominated for a Tony Award for A Strange Loop.
Corresponding game slipRoss’ run is scheduled to last eight weeks, from September 12 to November 6, at the Ambassador Theater.
The actor is best known for playing Candy in Pose, Ryan Murphy’s FX series set in the ballroom scene of ’80s New York and featuring several trans actors. Last month, Ross released her debut single and music video, “Only You.” She is also President of Miss Ross, Inc. and Founder of TransTech Social Enterprises, an incubator for LGBTQ talent with a focus on black, queer, and transgender people. She is a self-taught computer programmer and outspoken advocate for transgender rights.
Ross’ Broadway debut marks a historic moment for the Tony-winning musical revival as she joins a small cast of other openly transgender performers in lead roles, including Alexandra Billings in Wicked; L. Morgan Lee in A Strange Loop and Kate Bornstein in Straight White Men and Peppermint from RuPaul’s Drag Race in Head Over Heels.
The musical Chicago announced Ross’ arrival on the show in an Instagram post, and received plenty of positive reactions from castmates and fans alike.
Castmate Lana Gordon, who plays Velma Kelly, captioned the post, “Wow!!!!!!!❤❤❤,” and cast member and influencer Todrick Hall wrote, “This is exciting!!!”
Other new additions to the “Chicago” cast included Erich Bergen as Billy Flynn and Charity Angel Dawson as the matron “Mama” Morton.
Chicago debuted on Broadway in 1996 and is now the second longest-running show in Broadway history, behind Phantom of the Opera.
Several other Hollywood stars have taken on the role of Roxie, including Pamela Anderson earlier this year, Brooke Shields, Brandy, Lisa Rinna and Christie Brinkley. Ryoko Yonekura will play Roxie later this year, pro Broadway World.
