Hollywood actress and UN Humanitarian Ambassador Angelina Jolie has paid a surprise visit to one of the worst flood-hit areas in southern Pakistan, officials said, as the death toll from months-long flooding rose to 1,559.
V-shots showed Jolie arriving at an airport in Karachi, the capital of southern Sindh province, where flooding has killed 692 people, damaged hundreds of thousands of homes and left half a million people homeless since mid-June.
She later visited some of the flood-affected areas, according to local media.
Jolie is visiting Pakistan to help communities affected by the devastating floods, according to the IRC relief group.
There was no comment from the government on Jolie’s visit to Dadu, one of the worst-hit districts where waterborne diseases have caused nearly 300 deaths since July.
Doctors are currently trying to stem the outbreak of waterborne diseases among flood survivors.
The visit comes as Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif is in New York for the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
In his speech he will highlight the damage caused by climate change-related flooding in the impoverished country.
Pakistan says the floods have caused £26 billion in damage to the country’s economy.
