Angelina Jolie resigns as UNHCR ambassador after more than 20 years

Angelina Jolie announced that she will step down from her role as an ambassador for the United Nations Refugee Agency after more than 20 years.

The Oscar-winning actress said refugees are “the people I admire most in the world,” and will now focus her time working with organizations “led by those directly affected.” because of leadership conflicts”.

Writing on Instagram, Jolie said she will spend “the rest of her life” working with refugees.

“After more than 20 years, today I resign from working with the United Nations Refugee Agency,” she said.

“I believe in many things the United Nations does, especially in the lives it saves through emergency relief. UNHCR is full of amazing people who are making a difference to people’s lives every day.

“Refugees are the people I admire most in the world and I will work with them dedicatedly for the rest of my life.

“I will now work with organizations led by those most directly affected by conflict, the organizations that give them the greatest voice.”

UNHCR also released a joint statement with the actress, praising her for her “tireless” work on more than 60 field missions in countries including Yemen and Burkina Faso, and describing her is “one of the most influential refugee rights advocates”.

In it, Jolie added that she was “so grateful for the privilege and opportunity” to work with the “dedicated” members of the organization.

“I will continue to do everything in my power over the coming years to support refugees and other displaced people,” she said.
