A driver who parked across two spaces has sparked a debate on social media – users are arguing about who is right.

Because parking was expensive at the best of times, one motorist decided to take up not one but two spaces – when a driver, parked with his Audi over white lines, LeicestershireLive reported.

A passer-by walking in opposite a parking lot Birstall, Leicestershire, noticed a car taking up space in front of a row of shops and decided to post a picture of the Audi on the Spotted Birstall Facebook page and asked, “Why do people park like this?”.

The poster asked other Facebook users on the page for their opinions – as many users commented with reasons why a motorist would park with the intention of preventing other drivers from using a parking space.

One user wrote: “Why do people park like this? Real question, is there a specific reason or is it just ignorance?”

Some wanted to unkindly suggest that “ignorance is part of the territory” of owning an Audi. They suggested it was “typical behavior” by the owners of the German car.

One said, “That’s called utter recklessness! I’d put a wheel clip on it and pay a £100 fine.” Another added: “It’s a convertible and an Audi…says it all.”

Although many motorists predictably criticized the driver’s behavior, other users were ready to agree with this driver when in doubt.

As one user thought it wasn’t just Audi drivers but many others, he commented: “Unfortunately that’s the attitude of the modern driver.

Others were quick to defend the driver, saying he or she may have a valid reason for positioning their car.

One said: “He may have had a car seat. Can’t physically get him back in the car if you park in a regular space.”

Another said: “Maybe the car wasn’t parked properly next to him.”

A third comment in the motorist’s defense wrote, “A car may have been across lines before getting there.”
