Photos and video obtained by US media outlet TMZ after the incident show Ms Heche driving a blue Mini Cooper, which was later badly damaged at the scene.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the vehicle crashed into a two-story house and “went on fire.”

“It took 59 firefighters 65 minutes to reach, contain and completely extinguish the stubborn fire inside the severely damaged structure,” an LAFD report states.

“A female adult (was) found in the vehicle, who was taken to an area hospital by LAFD Paramedics in critical condition.”

LAFD also confirmed to the PA news agency that the vehicle drove 30ft into the residence but the home’s occupants escaped uninjured.

Spokesman Brian Humphrey added that the building was “unhabitable”.
