US actress Anne Heche is said to be in a coma and has not yet regained consciousness after a collision that left her car “in flames”.
eche, 53, was taken to the hospital following the incident Friday morning in the Mar Vista area of Los Angeles and remains in a critical condition.
She is a former partner of American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres – the couple began dating in 1997 before separating in 2000 – and is known for films such as Donnie Brasco, Cedar Rapids and Sessions. Psycho’s 1998 remake.
In a statement shared with US media outlet People, her representative said: “She suffered significant lung injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns requiring surgical intervention.
“She was in a coma and didn’t wake up immediately after the accident.”
Photos and video obtained by US media outlet TMZ after the incident show Ms Heche driving a blue Mini Cooper, which was later badly damaged at the scene.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), the vehicle crashed into a two-story house and “went on fire.”
“It took 59 firefighters 65 minutes to reach, contain and completely extinguish the stubborn fire inside the severely damaged structure,” an LAFD report states.
“A female adult (was) found in the vehicle, who was taken to an area hospital by LAFD Paramedics in critical condition.”
LAFD also confirmed to the PA news agency that the vehicle drove 30ft into the residence but the home’s occupants escaped uninjured.
Spokesman Brian Humphrey added that the building was “unhabitable”.
