Discussing the departure of her first co-host on the show, she said, “When my co-host Rick Adams left the show, I held the fortress on my own a time.”

Denise explains: “Sometimes [I would be] worked with various guest presenters with the view that they would be permanent if the chemistry between us was right.

“We had Ant & Dec on, but it didn’t work out – with two of them and one of me. Then we had Davina McCall, which was fine, but the producers liked the combination of one. boy/a girl.”

Denise revealed about the show in her new memoir A Bit of Me – released earlier this month – and said she ran into Vaughan during a late-night gig.

She wrote: Johnny is drawing sketches of Reebok Classic trainers. He made me laugh from crying.

“So I called Waheed [Alli, The Big Breakfast co-creator]. ‘I watched this guy on TV, Johnny Vaughan. He’s hilarious. You have to get him to give him a try’. “
